Goat Milk Baby Formula

9/12/2012

We breastfed our newborn son for around 3 months, then he became extremely disinterested. We tried several brands of pre-mixed formula from the store, but it would make him fussy and give him the runs. We switched to soy formula and he tolerated that for around 3-4 weeks, but then the runs returned with a vengence. After doing some research on the net, we discovered that a goat milk based formula might just do the trick. You can read the fine print, comments, and details about goat milk, if you go to the Organic Thrifty blog  but I will give you the short version - with just the recipe.
Mix 3 scoops Meyenburg goat milk powder Vitamin D (we use the similac plastic powder scoops, as it fits in the bottles better than the ones that come with the goat milk)  - don’t get the liquid version in a can as you can not mix it on the go - though they are handy for home use and reduce the amount of bottle shaking/mixing reqd.

2 tsp of the Red Star nutritional yeast

1 tsp of Spectrum Naturals organic sunflower oil

1 tsp of Barlean's coconut oil - the black plastic container is lightweight

1/2 tsp of RAW Garden of life child probiotic

1/2 tsp of Wholesome Sweetener black strap molasses unsulphured - helps keeps things tasty and stools soft

1/2 tsp of Wholesome Sweetener raw agave nector - low glucose

Next, we fill up the remainder of the bottle up to the 9 oz mark with luke warm water from the sink (ours is filtered after the pipe enters the house with a whole house filter, see our facebook page on this entry for other filter items you may need to complete the installation)

Cap the bottle with the nipple/top and then shake like no- ones business. You could make a larger qty and use the blender, but we like to make it as needed. Ensure that you washout the bottles and nipples very well and use bottle brushes, as the oils and such take a little longer to scrub away then your average formula.

Mixing the concoction does obviously take longer than regular formula, but really it becomes second nature after a little while and baby really thrives. Once you see the fussiness go away and the smiles the extra time spent is worth it tenfold.

There are a few other ingredients we leave out or use sparingly like cod liver & olive oil as well as amla that add a few extra minerals/vitamins for baby, but the six aformentioned items are easy to transport in a small bag/cooler so you can make a bottle on the go - or when baby is hungry and crying for a bottle.

For babies with lactose and soy allergies, there really is no other option.

Note: if you do a cost study of this formula vs. conventional, you will find that they are very similar, especially if you can source the ingredients at a good price by buying large volumes of the various ingredients.

Baaaaaa and good luck.
